Another week..

Yes, I know...another week neglecting my blog!

It's been one of those weeks where work has seriously got in the way of everything else I had to deal with in life!

Here in the UK the cold snap finally arrived - It was made all the worse by the fact that the weather has been ridiculously mild. So the fact that my heating has been not really working for the past two winters didn't really matter until this past week. Last Thursday was the lowest point, I was going to bed with 3 layers of clothes, socks, hot water bottle and an electric heater and actually started to get tearful because I couldn't feel my fingers. I put up with it last winter since the quote to fix it was almost an entire months salary. When the cold hit this past few weeks though it became apparent that I was going to have to scrape together every bit of money I had in order to get it fixed (eating is so overrated anyway, who needs money?!).

By chance I had lamented about my situation to a work colleague who in turn mentioned in to another of our colleagues. It just so happened that she got talking to a heating engineer who was trying to fix her own heating problem. She really came through for me because this guy agreed to do it for a 1/5 of what i'd been charged by the big supposedly reputable company. The guy even talked me out of getting some work done which was a help and really honest of him.

My heating is mostly fixed, I think it's going to take a few days to get the whole system going back up to speed, but now when I wake up in the mornings it isn't in sub zero temperatures! I feel kind of bad though because my colleague wasn't so lucky with her heating and has a huge bill that she can't afford to get done.

At the beginning of the year I was perusing a  Chinese website selling bulk items of pretty much everything. Like it or not, China is the centre of the industrial world and is much cheaper than pretty much everywhere else. I decided to give it a go by treating myself to some fabric scraps. I'm quite pleased to have a nice large bundle of fabric pieces! My only problem is that it was supposed to be 100% cotton, but with even my very small amount of fabric knowledge I can tell it's a poly cotton mix! Still, I have lots of craft projects in mind for this little bundle!

I'd also been looking for some garment labels that I could put into my handmade dresses and from the same website I found some cute little labels. The bulk nature of this website meant that yes, i've ended up with a massive bundle of these! I think they should definitely last me a long time!

If only I could find the time to do some actual sewing!

  1. It's been really cold here too. Tonight the low is supposed to be 4F (=-15C). Brr. It's supposed last till the weekend and then get a tad warmer again. Our heating works in the house but it's oil which is just ridiculously expensive nowadays. So we have been using small electric heaters mostly but with these temps we have no choice but to use the regular heat.
